OVERVIEW

Join us as we explore a stunning kingdom of ice in Western Greenland. The Ilulissat Icefjord transports billions of tons of ice from one of the world’s most active glaciers, and dumps these icy gems into the beautiful Disko Bay. We’ll spend the better part of a week, exploring this stunning and unique icy world.

We’ll charter boats to float amongst spectacular icebergs in the evenings. In the mornings, we’ll explore the Icefjord, the rocky coastline, and Disko Bay on foot, and from the air(drones). There will also be plenty of opportunities to photograph the colorfully painted village of Ilulissat, and its sled dog inhabitants.

An emphasis will be given to time spent in the field, creating incredible images, and working one-on-one with Josh and Dusty to improve craft and creativity. We will explore these stunning places with a very small group which will maximize your learning and will ensure greater flexibility for us to get to the very best locations for the conditions that we experience.

SKILL LEVEL AND CAMERA EQUIPMENT

This photo tour is open to photographers of all skill levels. The ultra-low instructor-to-participant ratio allows us to spend more time with each participant. At minimum, however, you should be familiar with your camera's controls and understand the basics of composition.

WEATHER AND CLOTHING

Greenland weather can be pretty dynamic. With average high temperatures around 50* Fahrenheit, and lows around 40*. We’ll experience very long days at this time of year. You’ll want to come prepared for rain, with waterproof rain shells, and warm layers to ensure comfort during changing conditions.

TRANSPORTATION AND LOGISTICS

Making your air arrangements - You’ll be flying into/out of Ilulissat Airport (JAV). You’ll need to book a flight that arrives on August 2nd, and departs on August 7th.

Lodging - We will stay the entirety of our time in one location, at the Best Western Plus Hotel Ilulissat. This hotel is strategically located for our morning hikes, and evening boat tours out of the Marina.

Rooms are extremely limited in Ilulissat. Very limited single room supplements may be available at a rate of $1,999. Single room supplement availability is not guaranteed, and will be granted on a first come, first served basis.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

There will a very limited amount of hiking on this trip. Generally, we will be walking relatively short distances which are sometimes at an incline, as well as positioning ourselves on potentially slippery and uneven rocks. So, having good balance and the ability to walk up and down an incline is important.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

We strongly suggest you purchase emergency medical treatment and medical evacuation insurance for this trip.

• Managing depth of field and achieving sharp focus
• Focus stacking for depth of field and stopping motion
• Capture for panoramic stitching
• Using filters effectively

Creativity in the Landscape: 

• Seeing the core compositional elements in the landscape
• Creative use of depth of field
• Long exposure techniques
• Learning and practicing new compositions
• Intentional camera movements and motion blurs
• Composing for different aspect ratios

And we'll also do at least one image review session and share some advanced digital darkroom workflow techniques.

120+ days to start of tour = Refund of deposit (Minus $250 Admin/Processing Fee) if/when reserved spot is able to be filled by another participant.
